Seating at a big family meal is always interesting...it seems to take a little while to figure out who is going to be sitting where at the table for dinner. It made me think of the Victorian custom of entertaining. It was even more complex than it is today. It had to be arranged alternating male and female and you couldn't sit across from the person you came with. Try being the hostess to arrange all that - talk about a headache...no wonder why planning for a dinner party began so early!
I was reading recently in Real Simple magazine about what is consider proper etiquette today concerning seating arrangements - anymore it's just find a seat and sit down! Much simpler...however, in a party of unfamiliar guests, I feel you wouldn't end up expanding your horizons...you're not put out of your comfort zone at all... maybe you miss out on meeting a great friend? So, which is better do you suppose?
